This weekend, we celebrated Brighton Pride, a vibrant event that brings joy and unity to our city. But let's take a moment to reflect on the history of Pride and the progress still needed. Pride is more than just a party; it's a commemoration of the struggles and triumphs of the LGBTQ+ community. It's about honouring the past, embracing the present, and working towards a more inclusive future.

Brighton Pride has deep roots, dating back to October 1972 with the first demonstration organised by The Sussex Gay Liberation Front (SGLF). The first full Pride march took place in July 1973. After a hiatus, Pride returned to Brighton in 1991. A significant milestone came in 2002 when Pride in Brighton & Hove explicitly included and referenced the trans community, making it a truly inclusive LGBT event. This inclusion reflects the evolving understanding and acceptance of diverse identities within the LGBTQ+ community.

Why is this history important to share? Inclusivity is at the heart of what I do at Rebekah Ann Jewellery because everyone deserves to feel seen, valued, and celebrated. The jewellery industry has long been steeped in traditional notions of gender and relationships, often sidelining those who do not fit these narrow definitions. By creating inclusive designs and using inclusive language, I aim to challenge these conventions and provide beautiful, meaningful pieces for everyone, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

Being inclusive should be the minimum standard for any business. I haven't always been vocal on social media, often out of fear of using the wrong language. But as an ally, I realise the importance of speaking up and being visible. The terms we use, such as "women's jewellery" and "men's jewellery," can perpetuate exclusion. At Rebekah Ann Jewellery, I strive to create pieces that celebrate individuality and love in all its forms.

Let's educate ourselves about the significance of Pride, acknowledge how far we've come, and recognise the work that still lies ahead. Happy Pride, everyone!
