I made my first self engagement ring in the summer of 2018. I made it for myself. It started after a bit of a rocky time, and I decided I needed to make a promise to myself. I love visual reminders, and what better way than with a ring.
An engagement ring is a promise. A commitment to love, honour and cherish. To be there. So shouldn’t we all make that promise to ourselves?
I wore it on my ring finger at first. But that didn’t feel quite right, this ring wasn’t about anyone else, it wasn’t to hide behind, it wasn’t a signal to the world. It was just for me. So I did a bit of research into the history of rings on different fingers and found that the index finger historically represented power. Royalty wore rings there as a sign of it. So I took that and turned it inward — into self empowerment. And I claimed the index finger as the self engagement finger.
It sounds a little out there, I know. But it genuinely helped me reconnect with myself. On a tough day I’d look at my ring and remember my promise. And boy, has it worked.
